Kendal 2nd's 23 New Brighton 2nd's 10

It was joint top of the league versus bottom of the league for this return encounter with New Brighton. The last time the 2 teams met Kendal won by 7 points and they new from previous experience with New Brighton league positions would count for nothing.

Kendal played into quite a strong wind for the first half with the forwards doing battle early on. Kendal were first on the scoresheet with fullback moss jinking a great line through the defence offloading to Nicholson for the opening score Boardley adding the extras for a 7.0 lead. This was a rare moment as for much of the remainder Kendal were pinned in there own half by a stubborn Brighton team. They used the wind and there forwards to great effect time and again using the driving maul. The very same that has been one of Kendal's key features this year. The Kendal defence though was superb time and again countering the danger before the pressure told and they conceded for a 7.7 score. Soon after Tomlinson was yellow carded for a harsh infringement allowing Brighton a 10.7 lead. Tomlinson was influential in defence all afternoon along with the workman like Jon Holmes. Brett Ashley made a fine break from his own 22 only to be stopped short but with a neat off load to hill keeping the move going even if his centre partners legs could not. Kendal did relieve the pressure late on in the half with 2 fine penalties from Boardley for a half time score of 13.10.

New Brighton started the second half again strongly kicking to the corners to get the driving maul moving. Kendal were asked at the interval to pick up the tempo and use the wind to pin the opposition back. Airey came on for Tim Large with Coulter moving to the wing and the pair linked superbly down the stand side before Coulters chip ahead was gathered by the lively Holmes to go over for a converted try 20.10. Holmes himself had a superb run later on outpacing several defenders and running through 2 more before been bundled into touch. Kendal now had the bit between there teeth and with the introduction of Hattam and Tomlinson senior added some fresh legs to the fight. Boardley kicked another penalty for a 23.10 lead. That was to be his last contribution before going off with a neck injury meaning Kendal played the last 10 mins with 14 men. Moss and Ashley were always a threat from deep and the pair almost linked up but again the final pass just going astray. New Brighton threatened late on but the Feature of the Kendal defence held strong and they saw the game out close to the New Brighton try line. On this evidence New Brighton would not be bottom for long and Kendal know now league positions count for nothing come 14.00hrs on a Saturday.
