LIVERPOOL ST HELENS 0 – KENDAL 23

Kendal travelled to bottom of the table Liverpool St Helens and found the going tough in a very low scoring first half.
The only points came from a penalty lineout in the fifteenth minute, an excellent catch and drive moved the ball close to the LSH try line and it was second row Liam Hayton who crashed over to score an unconverted try. Standoff Dan Stephens also missed with a long range penalty attempt late in the half. The only other clear scoring opportunity fell to Kendal in the thirty-first minute; the ball had been worked up field before flanker Andrew Hudson broke clear he charged for the try line and in the process of touching the ball down he knocked-on.

But a lot worse was to come for Kendal in the thirty-eighth. Centre Renier Bester, running onto an inside pass from winger Dan Murray (blown up by the referee for being forward), dived for the try line with the LSH winger in close proximity, Renier touched the ball down and both players began to gather themselves up, unfortunately it was very soon apparent that Renier had suffered a serious injury from a very innocuous situation – a compound fracture of his left ankle.

After the long delay because of the injury the end of the first half was completed and the second half started.
And Kendal soon showed that they had composed themselves and their play looked altogether tighter and slicker.
A wonderful run and chip and chase by winger Chris Park forced a penalty when the LSH fullback was penalised for holding onto the ball. Dan Stephens successfully kicked the penalty.

Throughout the game LSH competed hard to make Kendal’s life difficult but a second try came for the visitors in the sixty-third minute. From several minutes of pressure in the LSH twenty-two Andrew Hudson was driven over for an unconverted try.
Stephens kicked a second penalty in the seventy-sixth minute to extend Kendal’s lead to 16 points.

Kendal left the best to last. Hudson fielded a clearance kick and ran in back with gusto, he linked with his fellow flanker Nick McKain who kicked ahead and was able to touch the ball down for a try converted well by Stephens for a final score of 23 nil to maintain Kendal’s fifteen league game winning streak.
