Kendal 27 – Hull 17
Kendal were involved in yet another enthralling game of rugby on Saturday, this time Hull were their opponents.
Kendal scored first through a Dan Stephens penalty in the fourteenth minute and when Hull were again caught offside in the twenty-fifth minute Kendal extended their lead to six points. Moment’s earlier wonderful vision and a long spin pass by fullback Hoani Moore to Luke Ladell out on his left wing deserved to lead to a score but Ladell’s kick ahead was to long for him to chase.
Hull well and truly got themselves into the game after thirty minutes when Kendal were penalised for being offside. Standoff Carl Paterson kicked the three points and three minutes later Hull took the lead when centre Maea David broke through midfield and linked with speedy winger John Wilson who took the pass and raced in beside the posts for a try converted by Paterson.
However two minutes later Kendal were back in front. Dan Stephens with a lovely step breached the defence and centre Ian Voortman was at his side to take the pass and score an unconverted try in the corner.
On the stroke of halftime Kendal extended their lead when a player was a judged to have been pulled back chasing a loose a ball. Stephens successfully kicked the penalty.
Eight minutes into the second half however Hull regained the lead when their centres combined to run the ball out of midfield and scrumhalf Matt White was on hand to finish the move off with a try beneath the posts. Paterson again converted to give the visitors a 14 – 17 lead.
Kendal levelled the scores in the fifty-fifth minute when Hull were penalised at a ruck.
Kendal thought they had taken the lead ten minutes later when Dan Stephens raced through the defence, scrumhalf James Gough, in good support then passed to centre Renier Bester who raced in for an excellent try unfortunately the referee pulled play back for a forward pass. But Kendal did take the lead in the seventy-first minute when a super drive drove lock Liam Hayton over for Kendal’s second try which was converted by Stephens.
Paterson missed with a drop-goal attempt and a long range penalty for Hull before Stephens wrapped things up with his fifth penalty of the afternoon in the seventy-eighth minute.
So Kendal remain unbeaten at the top of the North One league table.
